MasterCard Launches Carbon Footprint Credit Card Tool
The environmental organization Brighter Planet recently partnered with MasterCard to offer business credit card customers a tool that helps them not just track their credit card expenses but also their carbon emissions. Software created by Brighter Planet analyzes cardholder purchases such as flights, car rentals, hotel reservations, and translates them into carbon dioxide emissions.
This carbon footprint tracking report will help each company get a snapshot view of how its carbon footprint looks, based on credit card expenses that tend to gobble up energy and produce a greater volume of harmful carbon emissions. American businesses spend almost $250 billion in a year in travel related expenses, for example, and that quickly correlates with many tons of carbon emissions. By making these businesses more aware of exactly how their carbon footprint is expanding, MasterCard and Brighter Planet hope to make it easier for those companies to better manage themselves to become more carbon neutral and eco-friendly.
“Travel is a huge driver of costs and carbon emissions,” Brighter Planet CEO, Patti Prairie explained to the media, “accounting for as much as 30 or 40% of total operations for some companies.”
